Inspired Ventures Tour de Mont Blanc was misrepresented at best, intentionally deceptive at worst. We were sold one version of the trip and somewhere along the line it switched to something else, without communication or approval from trip particpants. Upon on arrival we noticed our table reservations, luggage transfers tags were all under a company called Altitude Mont-Blanc, then found out that Inspired subcontracted out the trip to this company which would explain the mismatch in the trip we were expecting vs the trip we actually got. We paid a significant premium 50%+ to book through Inspired only to receive a substanially subpar experience. My expectation of the trip, which was communicated and verified several times, was this was a group trip with views, hearty lunches and inclusive pacing in mind - meaning the pace would be set by the slowest hikers in the group (this is common practice in group events like hiking, cycling, run clubs etc), we would have time to stop and enjoy the food/beverages at refuges and take plenty of pictures. This was not the case. I spent the majority of the time staring at the ground as we rushed through each day for some unexplained reason. We arrived every single day well before check-in and often times before our luggage even arrived, to quite literally sit for hours with nothing to do and no where to go.
The guide: She didn't seem to have the experience or leadership necessary to lead a group of people on a hiking trip. Expectations weren't communicated. She made no adjustments for different skill levels and never checked in on those hikers that weren't moving as fast as a select group. She allowed the pace to be set by members of the group vs. setting it herself based on the collective abilities. I recall only one instance where she shared useful information about the area, so for a well laid out trail that's clearly marked and mapped, I'm not even sure what the purpose of a guide actually was. Her handling of a situation with slower hikers less than 30 minutes into a very steep climb in the morning really soured the entire experience for me personally. Being accused of not working hard enough because people are chatting and laughing at the start of the morning was demoralizing, disrespectful and completely unnecessary considering again, we got everywhere we needed to go with hours to spare and we all paid a substantial amount of money to enjoy this trip.
The food: In every single piece of information communicated by Inspired Ventures we were told of hearty lunches, refuge stops along the trail and grocery runs we'd be able to make. Because of that I and many others did not pack many additional food items, assuming we'd be plenty fueled along the way. We were under the impression we were getting boxed lunches for the refuges which is quite common on the TMB. None of that happened. We had miserably small lunches the guide made, no stops at refuges for food and no stops at any grocery stores as we were told would happen. For something as physically demanding as the TMB, the lack of food options was negligent. We eventually put together that the guide likely needed to arrive very early at the refuges to prepare the next day's lunch - which again, was never communicated to us, never what we expected and unnecessary if the original trip had been delivered as described by Inspired.
The Tour de Mont Blanc itself, 5 stars. The experience with Laura and Elevated Pursuit Nutrition, 5 stars. The experience with Inspired Ventures, disappointing, deceptive and not worth the added expense for a useless app displaying a fake trip itinerary. My advice if you want to hike the TMB, book directly with an actual guide skipping the middle man or better yet, book everything yourself, the trail is well documented and laid out.
