About this trip

Calling all female photographers - Get ready for an adventure of a lifetime!

Hello and Welcome!

Join Angela Nicholson, photography journalist, kit expert and founder of SheClicks, and renowned wildlife photographer Ann Aveyard for a photography safari in the Masai Mara. With Ann’s wildlife expertise and Angela’s deep knowledge of photographic technique and equipment, this journey is designed to help you observe, explore and create with intention.

Set against the iconic plains and golden light of Kenya’s legendary reserve, this immersive experience blends expert guidance, abundant photographic opportunities in the field, and the support of a community of like-minded women.

Perfect for all levels — from those building confidence behind the lens to those seeking deeper creative connection — this trip invites you to slow down, embrace the moment, and capture the wild in ways that truly reflect your vision.

Why join this Wildlife Photography Works

Empowering, Female-led Space

This isn’t just a workshop, it’s a community. Designed by female photographers for female creatives, you'll find a supportive, confidence-boosting environment to grow, connect, and be inspired.

Learn in Real Wildlife Conditions

Develop confidence shooting wildlife in changing light and environments, with practical, in-the-moment guidance that helps you adapt, anticipate, and create meaningful images.

Space to Slow Down and Observe

Visiting the Masai Mara in November means fewer crowds and the freedom to slow down, observe behaviour, and work scenes more deeply. Resident predators, changing light, and expansive landscapes create powerful opportunities for meaningful wildlife imagery.

Genuine Connection, Not Just Instruction

This workshop goes beyond simply seeing wildlife or taking photos. It’s about slowing down, sharing stories, building confidence, and developing a deeper understanding of animal behaviour and the ecosystems they inhabit. That insight helps you create more meaningful images, new skills, and deeper knowledge.

Highlights

Iconic Wildlife & Open Plains

The vast savannahs of the Masai Mara provide an extraordinary setting for wildlife photography. From powerful big cat encounters to vast herds moving across open plains, every game drive offers the chance to capture raw, unscripted moments in one of Africa’s most celebrated ecosystems.

Golden Light & Ever-Changing Skies

Early mornings and late afternoons bring beautiful golden light, dramatic skies, and long shadows that add depth and atmosphere to your images. Combined with misty sunrises and expansive horizons, the Masai Mara offers ideal conditions for creating powerful, emotive photographs throughout the day.

Expert Guidance

Hosted by Ann Aveyard and Angela Nicholson from SheClicks, this trip is more than just a tour, it’s a hands-on learning experience led by two inspiring photographers who are passionate about sharing their knowledge. With their guidance, participants will gain confidence behind the lens, explore creative techniques, and connect with a supportive community of like-minded women.

Angela Nicholson

Founder of SheClicks, camera reviewer, cake connoisseur and enthusiastic encourager of getting a bit dusty in pursuit of the perfect shot.

Angela is the driving force behind SheClicks, a community of female photographers who are always up for a creative challenge - and possibly a slice of cake. Her career spans writing for titles including Amateur Photographer, Digital Camera, PhotoPlus, TechRadar and, of course, SheClicks itself, along with reviewing more cameras and lenses than you could ever pack for a safari. That said, this trip is firmly focused on you and the images you want to make.

Co-leading with the brilliant Ann Aveyard, Angela will be on hand throughout the trip to offer guidance, reassurance and the occasional gentle nudge to wait for behaviour to unfold or rethink your position for a stronger composition. She’ll have a camera or two with her, mainly to document the experience, but her priority is helping you make confident choices with your own kit in a fast-moving wildlife environment.

Angela founded SheClicks in 2018 to create a welcoming, supportive space for women photographers at every stage, from those picking up a camera for the first time to experienced photographers refining their voice. The community has grown to over 14,500 members and remains rooted in building confidence, encouraging creativity and ditching the idea that there’s only one right way to do photography.

She’s particularly passionate about helping photographers feel more comfortable with their settings, respond instinctively to changing conditions and enjoy the process rather than chasing perfection. In a place like the Masai Mara, that means learning when to slow down, when to react quickly and how to tell a story that goes beyond the obvious shot.

When she’s not leading trips, hosting the SheClicks Women in Photography Podcast or testing new gear, Angela lives in Oxfordshire with her partner and their very pampered border terrier. She loves strong composition, thoughtful framing and photographs that say something, not just show something. Bonus points if there’s good light and decent cake involved.

So if you’re unsure about your settings, debating lens choices or wondering whether it’s worth waiting just a little longer for that moment to unfold, Angela is there to help. Encouraging, practical and very much on your side.

Let’s explore the Masai Mara together, immerse ourselves in an extraordinary wildlife experience and come home with images that really mean something.

Ann Aveyard

Wildlife photographer, safari guide and someone who is very happy to wait patiently for the moment to happen.

Ann Aveyard is an award-winning wildlife photographer based in Ringwood on the edge of the New Forest, with a lifelong love of nature that began growing up in rural Wales, where the countryside was her playground. That early connection still shapes the way she photographs wildlife today.

After a successful career as a registered nurse in the NHS, Ann turned her full attention to photography, studying at Poole College and Bournemouth University before becoming a professional photographer in 2012. While she spent ten years photographing weddings and family stories, wildlife was always her first love. These days, she devotes her work entirely to wildlife photography and leads photographic safaris to the Masai Mara, a place that has been close to her heart since her first visit to Kenya in 2011.

Ann has travelled to Kenya many times over the past fifteen years and knows the Masai Mara exceptionally well. She is particularly respected for her understanding of animal behaviour, especially big cats, and for helping photographers anticipate moments rather than chase them. Her approach is calm and thoughtful, with an emphasis on observation, patience and storytelling rather than rattling off frames and hoping for the best.

With over sixteen years of experience, Ann has won numerous national awards and had her work published widely in newspapers and magazines. She is known for a natural, honest style, preferring to get exposure and composition right in camera rather than relying on heavy editing later.

On safari, Ann is generous with her knowledge and quietly encouraging, helping photographers feel confident with their settings, adapt quickly to changing light and enjoy the process. She believes a great safari is about more than ticking species off a list. It is about connection, curiosity and those moments when everything just comes together.

Ann is passionate about ethical wildlife photography and conservation, and hopes that through her images and teaching she can help others better understand and care for the natural world. And yes, she is perfectly happy to wait that little bit longer if it means the story is stronger.

If you want to deepen your understanding of wildlife behaviour, sharpen your field craft and come home with images that really mean something, Ann’s experience and calm guidance will be a huge part of your Masai Mara adventure.

Immersive Game Drives

These days are dedicated to immersive photographic game drives in the Masai Mara National Reserve and its surrounding areas, offering the time and space to truly engage with wildlife, light, and landscape.

We’ll depart before dawn each morning to take advantage of the best photographic conditions. Some days will include a bush breakfast, returning to camp for lunch before heading out again in the afternoon; on other days we’ll remain out on safari all day, carrying picnic breakfast and lunch so we can stay with sightings as they unfold and return to camp at sunset.

Across the week, you’ll explore a variety of habitats where predator encounters, herd movements, and quieter moments of animal behaviour unfold naturally. Expect ever-changing shooting conditions — from early morning mist to dramatic skies and warm evening light — with plenty of time to slow down, observe, and create meaningful, story-driven images.

There may also be opportunities during the week to take part in optional experiences, including a hot air balloon safari at sunrise or visits to local Masai villages and community projects, offering additional perspective on the people, wildlife, and ecosystems of the Mara.*

Governors’ Camp, Masai Mara

Set on the banks of the Mara River, Governors’ Camp offers one of the most photographer-friendly locations in the Masai Mara. Its prime position within the reserve allows for early departures and flexible game drives, meaning you can be out on the plains at first light and still shooting as the sun dips below the horizon.

With no fences separating camp from the wilderness, wildlife frequently moves through the area, creating spontaneous photographic moments right on your doorstep.

For photographers, the camp’s classic safari style and open setting enhance the entire experience. Spacious canvas tents provide a peaceful space to rest and review images, while communal areas overlooking the river are ideal for relaxed image discussions and reflection between game drives.

All game drives take place in exclusive-use safari vehicles, reserved solely for our group. This allows us to move at our own pace, spend longer with sightings, and wait when needed for the light, behaviour, or moment to unfold, without being rushed or needing to move on for other guests. Having our own vehicles enables a more considered, flexible approach to each game drive, creating the time and space photographers need to capture thoughtful, well-observed images.

The atmosphere encourages patience, observation, and connection with the environment, an ideal combination for capturing powerful, story-driven wildlife photographs in one of Africa’s most iconic landscapes.
